Study Visit and Meeting of Georgian and Polish Civil Society Organizations and Human Rights Defenders
2024-07-23 11:13:11

On July 18-19, a study visit and meeting convened in Warsaw, organized by ODIHR, brought together Georgian and Polish civil society organizations and rights defenders. This initiative, titled "CHANGE," gathered up to 15 representatives actively engaged in human rights and gender equality.

The Georgian delegation included Elena Rusetskaya and Maya Kuprava from the "Women's Information Center."

The primary objective of the study visit was to enhance the security and resilience of human rights defenders, empowering them to exert greater influence on democratic institutions and to devise effective responses to emerging challenges. Additionally, the meeting aimed to foster mutual exchange on combating the growing opposition to gender issues and promoting constructive dialogue.

The opening day featured a welcome address by Tea Jaliashvili, ODIHR's First Deputy Director. Notably, Jaliashvili previously served as Deputy Director at the "Women's Information Center" from 2017 to 2019, a fact of particular pride for the organization.

This study visit is part of the broader project "Increasing the Efficiency of Human Rights Defenders and Strengthening the Enabling Environment for Them." This project supports initiatives that enhance the safety and support networks for human rights defenders, including national human rights institutions and journalists. Concurrently, it aims to bolster the effectiveness and safety of their endeavors. By assisting human rights defenders across OSCE member states, the project seeks to advance and safeguard human rights. Expected outcomes of the study visit include the reinforcement of civil society resilience, the forging of stronger ties, and the exchange of thematic initiatives among Georgian and Polish counterparts and ODIHR.
